Module 3 - Stakeholder Engagement and Social Media

My name is Jen Baker and I am a Consultation Advisor at ATCO Electric. I am responsible for planning the consultation programs for various transmission projects, including creating information packages, hosting open houses, and meeting with people who have questions or concerns. With all this, it is safe to say that communication plays a huge part in my position.
Although my company has twitter and Facebook, we don’t utilize it for communicating project specific information. A well-rounded consultation program incorporates multiple ways for stakeholders to connect – including twitter and Facebook. Currently we use paper mail outs and our website to communicate our information. With everyone receiving massive amounts of mail, we know this is no longer effective. Personally, I would like to start distributing our information through various social media sites along with the traditional methods. However, this would mean we would need to be ready to respond and utilize social properly.
Consultation can be difficult and although not all concerns can be mitigated, some can. We need to be giving people different opportunities to connect with us and hear about the projects affecting them (such as open houses or a project update). I believe we need to have a better online presence to not only hear and respond to people’s concerns, but also hopefully form relationships.
